  • Top 5: Weird Things Dipped In Chocolate

Whether it be milk, dark or white there is always a place in my heart, stomach and mouth for chocolate. Nothing can be wrong when I'm indulging in the stuff. It's like a personal relaxant. Although even a chocoholic like me may have to think twice about indulging in some of these treats. Read on. 1) I don't know if this still holds a strange factor, but when I initially learned that people dipped bacon in chocolate I thought, weird. But maybe it's truly the perfect combination of sweet, salty, chewy and interesting. I'll let you decide. 2) Chocolate covered potato chips . Now you might think to yourself, that's not odd. Here is where I disagree, it's not really odd in the sense that it shouldn't be done, but I've never come across the stuff until my co-worker Elana brought some PEI Chips: Chocolate Covered Potato Chips (Old Dutch Rippled) back from her trip to the east coast . The verdict: super tasty. Should you come across this snack, embrace them. 3) Let's get into something more interesting shall we? Chocolate covered onions . I'm really not one for eating raw onions, though I suppose if you really enjoy the vegetable this might spruce it up . 4) Squid anyone ? I also don't eat squid and this ups the ante for my case. I can't eat something that looks exactly as it is, and this just takes the cake for me. I wonder if it's good, has anyone tried it? 5) Beware of the scorpion ! Apparently you can eat these eight-legged claw-snapping tail-stinging creatures. Though I don't know why you'd want to. Nonetheless, should you be interested don't fret because they're available dipped in chocolate! Kudos to anyone who has enough guts to bite into this . If you've tried it, or any of the items above, I'd really like to hear about your experience. Related: Top 5: Extreme Ice Cream Top 5: Outrageous Pizza Toppings Top 5: Foods on a Stick
  • Pic of the Week: Chocolate Genoise & White Chocolate Mousse Cakes

Are we all inspired to bake now... err or perhaps eat?! How beautiful are lamiavitadolce's mousse cakes? I was so impressed that I had to check out her blog (which is where I stole this photo from!) You see, the image that was uploaded to the site is great (see below,) but it didn't display the spectacular interior of the cake , and quite frankly, I just couldn't pass it up. The white chocolate mousse is perfectly situated in the centre. Amazing! I read up on these spectacular cakes on lamiavitadolce's site, and found out that she soaked the chocolate genoise in Grand Marnier simple syrup to avoid it being a tad dry. A smart idea indeed. I'm sure it enhanced the flavours tremendously. And apparently she'll be taking a pastry decorating class in the future, we'll need to keep our eyes out for lamiavitadolce's upcoming foodie treats! I can't wait to see what she's got up her sleeve. • Pic of the Week: Chocolate Lava Cake

    J. Atkins got to enjoy this scrumptious dessert and I have to say I'm a little jealous! With Valentine's Day around the corner (literally, it's tomorrow so don't forget to plan something nice for your other half - if you celebrate of course.) I thought that this was not only the perfect dessert for all you love birds, but the anti V-Day'ers as well. Why you ask? Because you can't hate chocolate cake with warm chocolate sauce inside and raspberry puree for garnish. It's just too good to pass up. I mean we're all allowed to indulge a little right? If you want an incredibly amazing and easy lava cake, check out Ricardo's recipe . Not only will it blow your mind of choco-heaven, everyone will think you're a super baker and that you've slaved over making it for hours (I swear by it, it's so simple and quick. I'm happy to say that I made it myself - you can check out the video and YES it turned out absolutely fantastic!) Regardless of what your plans are for the weekend, I hope you all enjoy it and sneak in a scrumptious snack...or a heavenly bite of lava cake! • Eye Candy: Chocolate Shots from the Foodnetwork.ca Flickr Pool

Extreme food porn alert! This Foodnetwork.ca Flickr round-up is all about chocolate , so buckle up and get ready for some full-throttle taste temptations! And when you’ve wiped the drool off your chin (don’t be too proud, I’m not), you can make one (or more) of the treats pictured, since the majority of them come with recipes ! OK, enough with the introductions, let’s do this, shall we? Above: A lot of days, I’d be tempted to stop right here. A soup bowl of melted chocolate like the one in ParsecTraveller’s pic is all you need to satisfy a chocolate craving. Some strawberries would be nice, but a spoon would work just as well (am I right or am I right?) Above: Here’s two "cups" of chocolate, Bitter-Sweet’s white chocolate mousse (with recipe ) and chockylit’s Peanut Butter Filled Chocolate Cupcake with Chocolate Ganache. Wow, I think the name of that treat has all of my favourite words in the English language in it! Bonus: she also included the recipe . Above: t.sullivan’s cake and jen’s tart look mighty fine with their fruit garnish, and both (conveniently) come with forks. But what if there was only one fork? Which would you choose? Or, better question: which treat would you eat first? Both have recipes , so this is not just a rhetorical question, it’s serious . Above: Finally, it's a cookie and moresome foursome: Lyvvie’s Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies (with recipe!) GardenCityGirl’s Chocolate Macaroons, Gnuf’s Strawberry-Balsamic Chocolates (with recipe!) And Meeta’s Chocolate Mountains (with recipe !), all of which look scrumptious, don't you agree? Got your own mouth-watering photos to share? Upload them to Food Network Canada's Flickr pool and they could be featured in an upcoming Eye Candy post! • February Food News Wrap-Up

Mark Goes Gourmet with Groceries Chef Mark McEwan is already the man behind some of the most respected restaurants in Canada (North 44°, Bymark), but now the revered chef and host of The Heat is ready to tackle the retail market. His first store, McEwan, opened this year in the Don Mills and Lawrence area of Toronto and features meals-to-go and grocery staples. The one-stop shop is top-class featuring fresh fish, a bakery and a 68-foot-long counter to doll out restaurant-quality prepared dishes. A Non-Descript Chip It’s time to name that chip! Doritos is running a contest to name their latest chip flavour and instead of waiting for the new moniker to be chosen, they’ve hit the market with unidentified white bags marked only with dollar signs. Contestants are being asked to try the flavour, name it and then create a 30-second commercial about it for a chance to win $25,000 . Don’t forget to check out Elana’s post and tell us about your all-time favourite chip flavour . Sweet Memories Soft drink brands Pepsi and Mountain Dew announced that they’ll be releasing two new variations on their classic drinks—Pepsi-Cola Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback. What’s so special about the new fizzy types? They’ll contain real sugar instead of the fructose corn syrup so many brands usually use. Nothing But Love for Olive Oil Wine lovers may be familiar with the Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand, but this month a new product from the lush land down under was introduced in select North American cities. The aptly named ilove Olive Oil, is a fruity and full-bodied extra-virgin olive oil produced by a collection of growers from the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay regions in New Zealand. We’ll be doing a giveaway and throwing up some recipes in the near future, so look out for that. Sensual Chocolate This February Kit Kat, the brand behind that snappy commercial break from the eighties and nineties (gimme a break, gimme a break, break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar!) launched their newest product, Kit Kat Senses. The new single bar treat features those classic crispy wafers covered in milk chocolate, but they’ve gone ahead and sandwiched some yummy hazelnut cream in there as well. The whole thing comes in at about 170 calories per bar. The Tastiest Snowflake… Ever! The miserable weather continues to linger, but if ever there were a reason to love snow and sleet, it’d have to be this delicious treat pictured...
