  • Chatter Box: Kitchen Fires, Iron Chef & Creating Allergies

It seems that I'm not the only who has experienced a Kitchen Disaster! I'm not ashamed to claim that I started a fire, well perhaps I should be. But it was a learning experience, and the important thing is that no one got hurt (house included.) We all have embarrassing stories and if you're brave enough, you'll add to the list. Just like Newfidadian ... No fires (yet,) but any time I cook it's pretty much a disaster! I don't have enough experience to use my own judgement when it comes to spices, I follow the recipe/measurements so precisely that my Dad used to tell me it's not a chemistry experiment ;) Inevitably the meals turn out bland . And despite following instructions, I've still managed to burn chicken in a slow cooker and yesterday there was an oatmeal explosion :-( Lady, turn that frown upside down. We'll get through this together, you me and the rest of us non-cookers. Stay tuned to Starting from Scratch , not only will we learn, but we'll all share tips to make cooking easier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Competition is on the mind of everyone who loves Michael Smith and Bobby Flay . With the big Iron Chef America reveal this evening, I had to include a comment about the battle. Pinstress will be watching... I am setting the PVR for this one. I love Michael's show on Food Network and am curious to see him in full battle dress and going top speed. Bobby Flay is great too, but how will he fare against some true Canadian 'Maple' whoopazz? Go Michael Go! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remember those days back in high school, college or university when you could eat anything and everything and it was always so good. Well no more! I'm so sad that the person who wrote this was a Guest and didn't sign in because I would love to attach a name and picture to it! This is how you create an allergy... In high school I used to eat ice cream and sunflower seeds like they were going out of style! Today (some 20 yrs later) if I were to eat ice cream I would be in BIG trouble. I am lactose intolerant! Not a pretty sight folks! Sunflower seeds would KILL me. I am allergic to them and they close off my throat in seconds! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks so much for participating on the site, keep chatting! Eats, Beats and Tweets We’re super excited to attend Roger Mooking’s inaugural Eats, Beats, and Tweets event happening this Friday. As part of Winterlicious in Toronto, host of Everyday Exotic wants his diners to tweet about the food, the music, the ambiance and pretty much anything they feel like at Nyood, his popular restaurant. These tweets will be projected onto the restaurant wall for everyone to see. The dining events take place on January 29th and 30th. Hopefully we’ll see you there! Details at Nyood . (Click on events ). February, Black History Month and Soul Food Roger’s also planning a special event for all of February to commemorate Black History month. It’s something close to his heart so I’ll let him tell you about it below. Iron Chef America: Canada vs. U.S. This Sunday, Michael Smith will battle Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America . I’m going to be live blogging that night so tune in, log on and watch Chef Michael do battle against Bobby Flay. People have been buzzing about it in the forum for weeks. Here's what Michael had to say: Ina's New Cookbook Psssst…. a little bird told me that Ina Garten’s much anticipated brand new cookbook is called Barefoot Contessa How Easy Is That? Such a fitting title no? I hear it will contain 100 of Ina’s best and easy tips for cooking and entertaining. It’s coming out in October 2010. No cover yet, but I’ll keep you posted. • Elana’s Father’s Day Giveaway Bonanza: More BBQ Books, Including Bobby Flay

On offer today; books by two of the ultimate grilling institutions, Bobby Flay ’s Grill It! and Weber’s (as in the ‘Q) Way to Grill . These two are no dabbler’s grilling fare – these are for serious dads. Dads who get touchy when kids come home from the nieghbours’ and brag about their bbq anything. Dads who mumble to themselves while basting their prey with secret sauces, and dads who make their own hybrid spatula-tong tools (like my father-in-law, no joke). These books are for the ultimate grill enthusiast. Bobby Flay’s Grill It! An extension of his wildly popular show of the same name , this book is conveniently organized by ingredients, and is Bobby’s way of saying, “I know how you feel when you say ‘I want burgers tonight’” He knows how you shop and how you live, so no matter if it’s chicken or beef or the sacred burger, his innovative rubs, sauces and marinades will turn your featured protein into a masterpiece. Weber’s Way to Grill People who’ve been in business for a zillion years making barbecues should know what they’re talking about. This is your step-by-step guide to all things grilling, be you a novice or that obsessive dad who makes his own barbecue tools (like my father in law. See above.) Virtually every recipe is colour coded in a section, with detailed photos of the meat, foul or fish and seafood along with the stuff of barbecue secrets. If there ever was the equivalent to The Joy of Cooking for barbecuing, you’re looking at it. Sadly, again, I’ve only one package containing the two volumes, so do your best to be the first to email me the correct answer to the following question: What is the name of Bobby Flay’s acclaimed resto that opened its doors in 1991? Email me at blog(@)foodtv(.)ca with Bobby Flay in the subject line. Please see Contest Rules . This Giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Michelle G. , of Burlington, ON.
